Types of GRE Exams in Nepal

There are mainly two types of GRE exams conducted in Nepal. Those are:

  1. GRE General Test
  2. GRE Subject Test

GRE General Test Structure

In order to enroll in a master’s program, doctoral program or a law program overseas, students take up the GRE General Test.  This GRE Exam evaluates students’ quantitative reasoning, analytical writing, verbal reasoning and critical thinking skills. Most of these skills are developed gradually during their schooling and are not specific to any particular subject or field of study.  Hence, the GRE aligns with the required skills for successfully enrolling in on-demand graduate programs, including Law and Business from top-ranked institutions across the world.

For GRE General Test, the total test time is about 3 hours and 45 minutes. There are 6 sections and the structure is given below:

Measure Number of Questions Allotted Time
Analytical Writing
(One section with two separately timed tasks)
One “Analyze an Issue” task and one “Analyze an Argument” task 30 minutes per task
Verbal Reasoning
(Two sections)
20 questions per section 30 minutes per section
Quantitative Reasoning
(Two sections)
20 questions per section 35 minutes per section
BREAK 10 minutes
Unscored¹ Varies Varies
Research² Varies Varies

  1. An unidentified unscored section that does not count toward your score may be included and may appear in any order after the Analytical Writing section. Questions in the unscored section are being tried out either for possible use in future tests or to ensure that scores on new editions of the test are comparable to scores from earlier editions.
  2. An identified research section that does not count toward your score may be included in place of the unscored section. The research section will always appear at the end of the test. Questions in this section are included for ETS research purposes.

GRE Subject Tests

GRE Subject Tests help the students prove their in-depth knowledge in particular field before going abroad to pursue graduate degree. This is for students who have an undergraduate major or extensive background in one of the following subject areas:

  • Chemistry
  • Mathematics
  • Physics
  • Psychology
